The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Internet of Things
Imagine a bright future! A world where robots are not just stupid things but brilliant inventions can work with human beings in tandem. A world that looks remarkably like a robotic utopia (well, without the homicidal robots!). This future is not just an imagination but a natural result of Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things, today’s two most dynamic developments.
Now the question emerges. What is the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence?
Well, Artificial Intelligence deals with creating algorithms that can use their previous knowledge and without any manual involvement to train to replicate human tasks. (Intelligent Systems, basically!). sIn the other hand, the Internet of Things is a network of different objects linked to the internet, and with each other, they can gather and share data.
Why does IoT need Artificial Intelligence?
By 2025, there will be more than 64 billion IoT units, up from around 9 billion in 2017, according to Business Insider. For actionable outcomes, all these IoT devices produce The Internet of Things to capture and manage the vast volume of data needed by the algorithms of Artificial Intelligence. In essence, these algorithms transform the data into usable, actionable outcomes that the IoT devices can enforce many data that needs to be gathered and mined where Artificial Intelligence falls into this picture.
IoT devices and the data they generate across the network will have little utility without AI-powered analytics. Similarly, without IoT-generated data flowing in, AI systems will fail to be important in business settings. However, the potent combination of AI and IoT will change businesses and help them make better choices about the exponential growth of data every day. IoT is like the body, and AI is like the brain, generating new value proposals, business models, income sources, and resources together.
Artificial Intelligence Applications on the Internet of Things
Although all of these fields have individual merit, only together will their full potential be understood. Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things need several diverse technologies across various sectors. Any of these are offered in the following manner:
1. Collaborative Robots
Would you like the help of a robot? Well, with Collaborative Robots or Cobots, that’s just what you’ll get. These Cobots are incredibly sophisticated devices intended to assist individuals in situations ranging from workplace to commercial environments in a collaborative workspace. They may be a robot arm programmed to carry out tasks or even a creative robot designed to perform challenging tasks.
2. Drones
Drones are airplanes without a human pilot (the machine does the piloting!). They are precious because they can explore unfamiliar conditions (even those beyond the internet’s scope) and reach locations that are dangerous to humans, such as offshore activities, mines, conflict zones, or burning houses.
3. Smart Cities
Why not entire cities when something is getting smart? Through a network of sensors linked to the physical city infrastructure, we can build smart cities. For different civic factors such as energy efficiency, air quality, water usage, noise pollution, traffic patterns, etc., these sensors may track the city.
4.Digital Twins
Digital Twins are twin objects of a real-world entity, and its digital copy is the other. These artifacts can vary from wind turbines to airplane engines. Digital Twins are primarily used without conventional measurement techniques to evaluate the output of the artifacts and thereby reduce the costs needed for testing.
5. Smart Retailing
The shopping made wise! Retailers can use AI and IoT to understand customer behavior (by analyzing the user’s online profile, in-store inventory, etc.) and then send customized deals in real-time while the customer is in the store.
REAL WORLD EXAMPLE
Although Artificial Intelligence in the Internet of Things is a relatively recent term, it has already been successfully implemented in many real-world implementations. These applications are given as follows:
Self-driving vehicles from Tesla Motors: Self-driving cars sound like futuristic science fiction, but they are very much part of today’s reality. The new developments in Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things are used by the self-driving vehicles of Tesla Motors. Although these cars are only in the testing stages, one of the simplest IoT inventions is still one.
A unique aspect of the self-driving Tesla cars is that they all behave like a linked network. That is passed on to all the other cars whenever one vehicle discovers any new knowledge. And this is used in different situations to project the actions of cars and pedestrians on the route.
WildTrack-Preservation of Endangered Species: In different countries, many animals are endangered or going extinct. The conventional ways of controlling these animals with collars are often stressful and unsafe (Both to the animals and researchers). The Footprint Identification Technique (FIT) of WildTrack uses IoT and AI algorithms to classify animals’ species, person, age, and gender from their specific footprint. It will also use this knowledge to identify trends related to animal movements, animals’ population, etc., that help conserve different endangered species.
Nest Laboratories-Smart Thermostat: Nest Labs’ Smart Thermostat (everything is being smart these days!) uses IoT to allow temperature sensors and controls using mobile integration from anywhere. It is also effortless to use, which is one of the key reasons for its achievement.
In the Nest Labs thermostat, Artificial Intelligence plays a significant role. It is used to consider the users’ temperature habits and their everyday routine as well. Then, for optimum temperature and maximum energy savings, it adapts accordingly.
Automated vacuum cleaner- iRobot Roomba: Why not a smart vacuum cleaner when anything else is getting smart? Three representatives of the Artificial Intelligence Lab of MIT are designing the iRobot Roomba, and it uses IoT and AI to clean a room as quickly as possible. It is a robotic vacuum cleaner that uses a series of sensors to locate barriers, dirty spots on the floor or even steep drops such as stairs.
So, it virtually remembers the living room configuration (as much as computers do anyway!) and only uses the cleaning motions that are most effective and economical. It can change to “Clean” mode, “Spot” mode, “Dock” mode, etc., a mobile app to change performance specifications.
THE FUTURE AHEAD
It is a fantastic new time (both for humans and machines!) to live. With many artificial intelligence developments, light-speed networking, and analytics, IoT is much more convenient, and high-performance IoT computers take over almost every technology area. Besides, the decreasing cost of hardware makes it possible to integrate sensors and networking into virtually any system imagined.
Taken together, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things are ushering in a new age in which “smart” is only the natural state of being. In the future, robotic utopia seems to be more and more achievable.
